Community Reception – Tribute to the late Sam King
Black Stock Media, in partnership with Lambeth Libraries presents a Black History Month Tribute to a community champion.
An evening reception to celebrate the life and work of Sam King (1926-2016): political activist, RAF serviceman, Windrush pioneer, community builder, and the first Black mayor of Southwark.
An appreciation with performance, spoken word and music.
Refreshment and books on sale.

If you know very little about Sam King this is the time for you to learn more about him.
Some of the things he achieved in his life time.
He went on to become the first black mayor of the London borough of Southwark, in 1983, and helped pave the way for the Notting Hill carnival, Britain’s first multicultural street festival. He worked alongside Claudia Jones on the Notting Hill Carnival.
In 1995, he and Arthur Torrington set up the Windrush Foundation, a charitable organisation dedicated to keeping alive the memories of the young men and women who braved the high seas to come to Britain after the second world war. He spoke enthusiastically at community events and schools about his experiences.
